Iran in the world of Paleolithic archaeology: a geographical perspective
The geographical position of the Iranian Plateau suggests that early human ought to migrate across the land of Iran from Africa to East Asia. The Iranian Plateau situates between two water bodies, the Caspian Sea to the north and the Persian Gulf and of Oman Sea to the south and it lies along easiest route from western to eastern Asia. I review the Paleolithic evidence and geomorphological circumstances of the Iranian Plateau for determining migratory paths toward this land. This paper will consider biogeographical concepts such as dispersal probabilities influenced by physiographic setting. This paper suggests three potential paths models in a regional scale. The first probable path is west central Zagros Mountains where the intermountain valleys of Khorramabad and Kermanshah are situated. This region belongs to the Karkheh drainage basin where a network of the rivers connects many Paleolithic habitat areas. The second suggested area is the southern Zagros Mountains with a moderately heterogeneous and gentle topography. There are also many intensive intermountain valleys which connecting each other by natural passes and river networks. The southern Zagros Mountains have housed many Paleolithic settlements and occupation areas such as Marvdasht, Arsanjan and Dasht-e Rostam. The corridor of central plateau right above Hormoz channel is the last probabilities that here I will examine as gate for early human to this land.
